SIM welcomes Cromwell Mashengete, Senior Equity Portfolio Manager

| Investment Outcomes

At Sanlam Investment Management (SIM), we continue to resource our equity team to further enhance the value-add to our client portfolios. To that end I am pleased to announce that SIM has appointed Cromwell Mashengete as a Senior Equity Portfolio Manager and equity strategist. He joins us effective 1 April 2017.

Cromwell Mashengete has 17 years of experience as an investment professional. He was a Portfolio Manager at Prudential Portfolio Managers (South Africa) (Pty) Limited for 9 years. He joined Prudential Portfolio Managers in November 2005. Prior to Prudential he worked as Portfolio Manager at OMAM and assumed management responsibility for third-party institutional funds. Prior to OMAM, Mashengete spent five years at Franklin Templeton NIB Investments where he was the Member of the Executive Committee. In 1990, he joined the Development Bank of Southern Africa, where he fulfilled the role of Project Leader for two years. Towards the end of 1991, he took on the position of Economist at Standard Bank of South Africa. Thereafter, Mashengete joined Deloitte & Touche as Management Consultant where he stayed for three years.

He started his career as a Lecturer in Economics at the University of the North in 1983, and then joined Syfrets Limited as a Marketing Analyst in 1995. He is also a Member of the JSE Advisory Committee on SRI [Socially Responsible Investing].  Mashengete has a BA (Hons) degree in Economics from the University of the North, an MA [Development Economics] from Stanford University, and an MBA from Brunel University.

Following this addition to the equity team, I am pleased to inform you that SIM has made significant progress in driving transformation in the investment team by improving the representation of black individuals in the business. The equity team is now 62% black and the entire complement of the investment team at SIM is 60% black. We have made great strides in addressing our short-comings when it comes to our transformation initiatives and will continue to make improvements in this regard as opportunities to expand the team arise and will communicate any developments accordingly.

Kind regards

Azola Zuma
